For Florida students, they also bring the first round of <\/span><b>FAST testing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the 2026\u201327 school year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When your child&#8217;s results arrive, you may see terms like <\/span><b>PM1, scale score, achievement level, FAST ELA, or FAST Math<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It can be a lot of information to take in, especially when all you really want to know is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Is my child where they need to be, and what can I do to help?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tutoringclub.com\/johnscreekfl\/\"><b>Tutoring Club of Johns Creek<\/b><\/a><b> (CR 210)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we encourage parents to think of PM1 as a starting point. The results can help you better understand your child&#8217;s academic strengths, recognize areas that may need additional attention, and make informed decisions about support throughout the school year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-is-the-florida-fast-test\"><\/span><b>What Is the Florida FAST Test?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/accountability\/assessments\/k-12-student-assessment\/best\/\"><b>F.A.S.T<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> stands for the <\/span><b>Florida Assessment of Student Thinking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It is Florida&#8217;s progress-monitoring assessment system and is aligned with the state&#8217;s <\/span><b>Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/academics\/standards\/subject-areas\/math-science\/mathematics\/\"><b>(B.E.S.T.)<\/b><\/a><b> Standards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FAST measures student performance in ELA Reading through grade 10 and Mathematics through grade 8.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead of relying on one assessment at the end of the school year, FAST gives families and educators three opportunities to look at student progress:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>PM1 \u2013 Beginning of the year:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Provides a starting point for the school year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>PM2 \u2013 Middle of the year:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Helps measure progress after several months of instruction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>PM3 \u2013 End of the year:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Measures student achievement after a full year of grade-level instruction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Looking at these results together can help parents see not only where their child is performing, but also how they are growing throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"when-is-fast-pm1-for-the-2026%e2%80%9327-school-year\"><\/span><b>When Is FAST PM1 for the 2026\u201327 School Year?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the 2026\u201327 school year, Florida&#8217;s PM1 testing window for grades 3\u201310 ELA Reading and grades 3\u20138 Mathematics runs from <\/span><b>August 10 through September 25, 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Individual schools choose their testing dates within the state&#8217;s testing window, so St. Johns County families should check their school&#8217;s calendar and communications for specific dates.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-does-your-childs-pm1-score-mean\"><\/span><b>What Does Your Child&#8217;s PM1 Score Mean?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the most important things to remember about PM1 is that it happens <\/span><b>at the beginning of the school year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your child has only recently entered a new grade and has not yet received a full year of instruction on that grade&#8217;s standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That is why we encourage parents to look at PM1 as a <\/span><b>starting point rather than a final judgment of a child&#8217;s abilities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you receive the results, instead of focusing only on the level, consider asking:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What does this tell me about my child&#8217;s strengths, and are there skills that may need some additional support?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That question can help turn a test score into useful information.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"understanding-the-five-fast-achievement-levels\"><\/span><b>Understanding the Five FAST Achievement Levels<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FAST results are reported using five achievement levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Level 1:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The student may need significant additional <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tutoringclub.com\/johnscreekfl\/academic-programs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">academic support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Level 2:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The student is developing skills but is not yet demonstrating grade-level performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Level 3:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The student is performing on grade level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Level 4:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The student is demonstrating strong performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Level 5:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The student is demonstrating the highest level of performance measured by the assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Parents may also see a scale score and information about performance in specific reporting areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All of this information can help provide a more complete picture of your child&#8217;s performance. One number alone rarely tells the entire story.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"looking-beyond-the-fast-score\"><\/span><b>Looking Beyond the FAST Score<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If your child receives a Level 1 or Level 2, it is completely understandable to be concerned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The next step is figuring out <\/span><b>where your child is having difficulty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students can receive similar overall scores while struggling with very different skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, a child who is having difficulty with ELA Reading may need additional support with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tutoringclub.com\/johnscreekfl\/phonics-sight-words\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">phonics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and decoding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reading fluency<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vocabulary<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reading comprehension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">identifying key ideas and details<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">understanding more complex text<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In math, a student may have gaps in areas such as foundational computation, fractions, problem solving, algebraic thinking, or skills introduced in previous grades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Understanding the skills behind the score can help parents and educators determine what kind of support may be most helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-can-parents-do-after-receiving-pm1-results\"><\/span><b>What Can Parents Do After Receiving PM1 Results?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1. Consider What You&#8217;re Seeing at Home<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Think about whether the results match what you have been noticing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does homework seem to take longer than expected?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does your child avoid reading?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Are basic math skills making new concepts more difficult?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does your child understand the material during homework but have difficulty showing what they know on a test?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sometimes PM1 confirms something a parent has already been noticing. Other times, the results may come as a surprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Either way, they give you an opportunity to ask questions early in the school year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Talk With Your Child&#8217;s Teacher<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your child&#8217;s teacher can provide important context.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask whether the FAST results match what they are seeing in the classroom and whether there are particular skills they recommend practicing or monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FAST is one piece of the picture. Classroom work, teacher observations, grades, and what you see at home all provide valuable information as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Give Your Child Time to Grow\u2014But Pay Attention to Significant Gaps<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not every lower PM1 score means a child immediately needs tutoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students are at the beginning of a new grade, and growth is expected throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, if the results show significant gaps and you are also seeing academic frustration at home or hearing similar concerns from the teacher, addressing those areas earlier can give your child more time to build the skills they need.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. A math student may be learning a new concept while still working to master a foundational skill needed to understand it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This doesn&#8217;t mean a student isn&#8217;t capable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It simply means there may be skills that need more time, practice, or instruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finding those areas early in the school year gives students more time to strengthen their foundation while continuing to learn new material in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"pm1-is-a-starting-point\"><\/span><b>PM1 Is a Starting Point<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether your child&#8217;s PM1 result is a Level 1 or a Level 5, the goal is continued growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>PM1 shows where your child is beginning.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>PM2 gives you another opportunity to look at progress.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>PM3 shows where your child finishes after a year of instruction.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Parents don&#8217;t need to become testing experts.
