First observed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/wfmh.global\/world-mental-health-day\/\">World Federation for Mental Health<\/a> in 1992, World Mental Health Day is now supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/world-mental-health-day\/world-mental-health-day-2020\">World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO) and is held annually to raise public awareness and educate the world about mental health. While the increasing popularity of initiatives such as this proves that the topic is no longer the taboo it once was, the world still has a long way to go in terms of destigmatizing and understanding the many mental health issues that people face today.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps unsurprisingly, students are currently among the most at-risk groups for mental health issues. You could attribute this to a number of reasons, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heightened academic pressure due to rising competition<\/li>\n<li>Impossible beauty and popularity standards set by social media which can lead to bullying and low self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Existential threats such as school shootings, social and racial injustices, climate change, and, most recently, worldwide pandemics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No matter the cause, it is clear that our education system must learn to meet this ever-evolving crisis of mental health head-on. The first step? Ensuring enough attention and resources is driven towards in-school counseling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Role of the In-School Counselor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The in-school counselor\u2019s role can be quite varied and is often shifting and evolving to meet their students\u2019 needs. On a base level, they are responsible for providing students with a neutral and safe space to deal with any academic or emotional conflict that they might be dealing with. They offer support and guidance to students who seek it, but who may not be willing to speak with their parents or teachers. They can also work with students on goal-setting and give academic, college, and career advice.<\/p>\n<p>In-school counselors can work with students one-on-one, in small groups, or even in a classroom-style setting if addressing a school- or grade-wide issue. When necessary, in-school counselors can facilitate parent-teacher conferences, parent-parent consultations, or parent-student meetings. Parents and educators alike should feel comfortable using in-school counselors as a resource when dealing with any student-related problems. Should a student or family situation progress beyond the scope of the in-school counselor\u2019s ability, the counselor can make referrals for more long-term assistance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benefits of Effective In-School Counseling <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The benefits of effective in-school counseling are wide-reaching. First and foremost, it can allow students to feel as though their voices are heard. It aids them in honing their communication skills and learning to manage their emotions. It encourages self-advocacy in students and helps them to develop problem-solving skills that they will use throughout their personal, academic, and professional lives.<\/p>\n<p>While their primary concern should always be their students, the in-school counselor can also provide much-needed support to teachers, administrators, and parents. They can offer teachers resources and advice regarding classroom management and the effectiveness of specific teaching styles. They help their schools run smoothly by identifying student issues, needs, and challenges through observation and data analysis. And they can work hand-in-hand with parents to develop a practical and achievable plan for their student\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>_________________________<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, mental health is no longer a topic that can be brushed over, but one that must be carefully considered and thoughtfully addressed by our education system.
