\n<\/strong>Summer vacation provides a much needed break from the rigors of classroom instruction, but just because school\u2019s out doesn\u2019t mean students should stop learning.
\nIn fact, some students will\u00a0lose up to two months\u00a0of academic gain from the past year if they don\u2019t take actions to retain what they\u2019ve learned.<\/p>\n

Children are understandably eager to spend more time outside the classroom after a long school year, so what can parents do to break the academic decline of summertime?<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Reading is one of the most academically enriching summertime activities. While it may seem challenging to convince your child to spend vacation days with a book, reading leisurely can be both rewarding and enjoyable, as well as help your child retain stronger reading skills for the fall.<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents who don\u2019t continue reading over the summer are the most likely to lose ground. Before you let students run free, encourage them to keep reading,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0suggests Michelle Scott, Owner\/Director of\u00a0Tutoring Club of McLean<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Take your child to the library to enroll in a book club or browse for summer reading lists; encourage areas of new interests that expand the imagination.<\/p>\n

Play More<\/strong>
\nWhile reading books this summer is important, setting aside time for play is educational too. Experts agree unstructured play is beneficial to childhood development of creativity, imagination, and dexterity, as well as physical, cognitive, and emotional strength.<\/p>\n

Play time allows children to create and explore a world where they\u2019re the master, helping them to conquer fears while practicing more adult roles.<\/p>\n

Create More<\/strong>
\nEngaging in arts and crafts is another way for your child to learn and play at the same time. Art is beneficial to a child\u2019s sensory perceptions, dexterity, and spatial reasoning. Crafts build confidence when your child finds a sense of accomplishment in creating something new.<\/p>\n

Making arts and craft supplies available is an inexpensive, easy way to keep your child learning and growing during the summer.<\/p>\n

\nSummer is also the best time to help your child\u00a0catch up or get ahead\u00a0academically without the pressures of a regular classroom structure.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust as athletes train and condition their bodies all year round, students who enroll in a\u00a0<\/em>Summer Camp<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0at Tutoring Club will sharpen their academic abilities and retain more of what they\u2019ve learned during the school year,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0adds Scott.<\/p>\n
