MATH MILESTONES<\/strong><\/p>\n

National Math Awareness Month<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in April is a good time for parents to assess their child\u2019s progress on the road to academic achievement and mastering math skills along the way.<\/p>\n

Although children may develop academic skills at a different rate, there are general math milestones that parents should mark to keep their child on track; since children who struggle in their elementary years can quickly lose confidence or develop negative attitudes toward higher learning later.<\/p>\n

If you find your child isn\u2019t tracking with these grade level markers, now\u2019s the right time to test for any math skills that\u00a0may have been missed.<\/p>\n

3rd Grade<\/strong>
\nKnow the concept of multiplication<\/em>
\nMultiply and divide single-digit numbers<\/em>
\nWeigh objects with a scale, and understand ounces and pounds<\/em><\/p>\n

4th Grade\u00a0<\/strong>
\nAdd and subtract decimals, compare decimals and fractions<\/em>
\nMultiply multi-digit numbers by two-digit numbers<\/em>
\nDivide multi-digit numbers by one-digit numbers<\/em><\/p>\n

5th Grade<\/strong>
\nAdd and subtract fractions, decimals and percentages<\/em>
\nUse long division to divide large numbers by multi-digit divisors<\/em>
\nUnderstand and compute perimeter, area and volume of simple objects<\/em><\/p>\n

6th Grade<\/strong>
\nCalculate percentage<\/em>
\nUse proportions to solve problems<\/em>
\nCompare decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers, both positive and negative<\/em><\/p>\n

Middle school years can be a struggle for students as well. As preteens transition from a traditional one-class environment to multiple classes and teachers, for example, parents need to reassess their student\u2019s foundation in math skills to be fully prepared for higher learning challenges ahead.<\/p>\n

7th to 9th Grade<\/strong>
\nMaster basic math concepts and pre-algebra\u00a0<\/em>
\nAdd, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals accurately<\/em>
\nUnderstand and be able to solve for an unknown (x) and solve two step equations<\/em>
\nBe able to calculate squares and square roots<\/em>
\nRecognize angle relationships and circle characteristics<\/em>
\nUse geometric formulas to find perimeter, area, and circumference\u00a0<\/em>
\nUse Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing length of a side of a right triangle<\/em><\/p>\n
