A Parent’s Guide from Tutoring Club of St. Johns

Report cards are arriving, and for many families in St. Johns County, they bring a familiar mix of excitement, relief, and sometimes concern.

But here’s something we encourage parents to remember: A report card tells you how your child is performing in school, but it doesn’t always tell you the whole story about how they’re learning.

An A doesn’t necessarily mean a student has mastered every skill, just as a C doesn’t mean they’re not capable of success.

The real value of a report card comes from understanding what’s behind those grades and knowing what to do next.

Here are five things we encourage parents to look for when reviewing their child’s academic progress.

1. Look for Patterns, Not Just Individual Grades

It’s easy to focus on the letter grade at the top of the page, but patterns often reveal more about a student’s learning experience.

Has your child consistently struggled in math? Have their reading grades gradually declined? Are they performing well on homework but having difficulty with tests?

These patterns can offer clues about where additional support may be beneficial.

For example, a student who understands math during homework but struggles on assessments may need more practice applying concepts independently or developing test-taking confidence.

Parent Tip: Compare your child’s current report card with previous grading periods. Look for trends in performance rather than reacting to one grade.

2. Good Grades Don’t Always Mean There Are No Learning Gaps

When a student brings home A’s and B’s, it’s natural to feel reassured.

And those accomplishments absolutely deserve recognition!

However, strong grades don’t always guarantee that a student has developed a solid foundation in every academic skill.

Some students earn good grades through hard work, extra help at home, or memorization without fully understanding the underlying concepts.

As academic expectations increase, particularly in middle and high school, those missing foundational skills can become more noticeable.

Parent Tip: Ask your child to explain something they’ve recently learned. Being able to teach a concept in their own words can provide valuable insight into their understanding.

3. Pay Attention to Confidence and Attitude Toward School

Sometimes the most important signs of academic difficulty never appear on a report card.

Has your child started saying things like:
