For high school students throughout St. Johns County, October brings an important academic milestone: the PSAT.

Whether your student attends Beachside High School, Nease High School, Creekside High School, or another nearby school, taking the PSAT can bring a mix of excitement, uncertainty, and anxiety.

Some students walk away feeling confident. Others come home frustrated, worried about their performance, or convinced they didn’t do well.

If your child came home stressed after taking the PSAT, here’s what we want you to know: One test does not define their academic future.

At Tutoring Club of St. Johns, we encourage families to look at the PSAT differently. Rather than seeing it as another test score, consider it an opportunity for test prep to identify academic strengths, uncover learning gaps, and begin preparing for the SAT before the pressure of college applications begins.

What Is the PSAT, and Why Does It Matter?

The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) is designed to measure skills students will need for college readiness and future SAT testing.

The assessment focuses on two major areas:

  • Reading and Writing: Reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, grammar, and effective written communication.
  • Math: Algebra, advanced math, problem-solving, data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry.

For freshmen and sophomores, the PSAT provides an early look at academic readiness.

For eligible juniors, the PSAT/NMSQT also serves as the qualifying assessment for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

But one of the greatest benefits of the PSAT is the information it provides families about where their students may need additional school support.

When Will St. Johns County Students Receive Their 2026 PSAT Scores?

According to the PSAT/NMSQT information shared with local families, scores are scheduled to become available November 5, 2026, through students’ College Board accounts.

Because score release dates can vary by testing and submission schedules, families should confirm the date with their student’s school.

How to Access Your Child’s PSAT Scores

Option 1: College Board Account

Students can sign in to their College Board account to view their PSAT/NMSQT scores.

Access PSAT Scores Through College Board

Option 2: BigFuture School App

Students who provided their mobile phone number on test day may receive a text message with instructions to download the BigFuture School app and access their scores.

Option 3: Home Access Center (HAC)

According to the school-provided information, PSAT scores will also be uploaded into HAC at a later date, which has not yet been announced.

The school information also notes that scores will not be distributed directly through counseling or testing offices. Students should access their results through College Board or HAC once available.

Parent Tip: When your child’s scores arrive, don’t focus only on the overall number. Review the individual Reading and Writing and Math results to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.

Your Child Was Nervous About the PSAT. Now What?

Test anxiety is common, particularly when students are unfamiliar with standardized testing.

Some students worry about running out of time. Others become frustrated when they encounter unfamiliar questions or struggle to recall concepts they’ve previously learned.

For parents, it can be difficult to determine whether those feelings reflect academic gaps, unfamiliarity with the test, or simply the pressure of the testing environment.

Start by asking your student:

  • Which section felt most challenging?
  • Did you have enough time to finish?
  • Were there questions you didn’t understand?
  • Did you feel prepared going into the test?

These conversations can provide useful insights even before scores are released.

Most importantly, remind your student that the PSAT is a starting point, not a final judgment of their abilities.

Why Starting SAT Prep Early Can Make a Difference

Many families wait until junior or senior year to begin thinking seriously about SAT preparation.

However, beginning earlier gives students more time to strengthen foundational skills without the added pressure of approaching college application deadlines.

1. Identify Learning Gaps Before They Grow

A student’s PSAT performance may reveal weaknesses in algebra, reading comprehension, grammar, or problem-solving.

Addressing these gaps early can help students develop stronger academic foundations that benefit both classroom performance and future standardized testing.

2. Build Confidence Through Preparation

Students who understand the SAT’s format, question types, and timing may feel more comfortable approaching the exam.

Familiarity and practice can help reduce uncertainty and build confidence.

3. Develop Effective Test-Taking Strategies

Successful SAT preparation involves more than reviewing academic content.

Students also benefit from learning how to manage their time, approach challenging questions, use available testing tools, and recognize common mistakes.

4. Create a Personalized Preparation Timeline

Every student begins at a different level.

Some students need additional math support, while others benefit from focused reading and writing instruction.

Starting early allows families to create a realistic preparation plan based on individual needs rather than rushing to prepare shortly before an SAT test date.

Four Things Parents Should Do When PSAT Scores Arrive

When your child’s PSAT results become available, consider these four steps.

Step 1: Review the score report together.

Look beyond the total score and examine the Reading and Writing and Math sections.

Step 2: Identify specific areas for improvement.

Pay attention to the knowledge and skills categories where your child needs additional practice.

Step 3: Discuss future SAT goals.

Consider your child’s grade level, academic interests, potential college plans, and anticipated SAT testing timeline.

Step 4: Develop a preparation plan.

Whether your student needs to strengthen foundational math skills, improve reading comprehension, or learn effective test-taking strategies, a targeted plan can make preparation more manageable.
